Dear Business Owner:
I went on a diet earlier this year. I needed to. I had just hit 40 years of age, and I stepped on the scale and I realized that I weighed more than I had ever weighed in my entire life.
It wasn’t just any diet, though. It was something called the “Slow Carb Diet.” Popularized in a few books and by a few diet programs, the goal is to avoid white carbs – like pasta, potatoes, rice, milk, cheese, bread – and eat a ton of protein.
Chicken Thighs and Free-Range Steak. A Breakfast Scramble of Four Eggs, Spinach and Garlic. Lentils with Sriracha Sauce. I found myself eating the same things over and over, I didn’t need to exercise, and I actually enjoyed the food.
In 5 Days I lost 5 and a half pounds. In two weeks, a total of 8 pounds had melted away.
Sure, I had to make some sacrifices that were painful. No more sugar in my coffee – and only a tablespoon of cream. No sports drinks – so lots of water instead. Crackers and chips went bye-bye, and there was discipline involved – so I had to eat within 30 minutes of waking up or my metabolism would be out of whack.
I learned a simple lesson: A diet that you follow is likely a diet that works.
So…about the Halitosis and Nosebleeds?
Oh yeah. Those.
Turns out a by-product of this particular diet is, well, stinky breath. Popping mint after mint can help a little bit, but, let’s just say that in order to prove that the diet is working, you might need to breathe near your significant other. And they may politely ask you to pop a couple more mints.
And a by-product of the added intake of all that spinach and free range beef is, for some people, nosebleeds. That’s because of the lack of copper in the diet: something fixed through a multivitamin.
So let’s talk about small business. Or, specifically, your small business. If you follow the right type of small business marketing program – heck, if you follow ANY prescribed marketing PROGRAM – it will work…but there will be side effects.
Social Media. Local Marketing. Web Marketing. SEO. PPC. Click-Throughs. Mobile Marketing. Tags. QR. Twitter. Facebook. LinkedIn. Couponing. Daily deals.
All of these things work to bring more customers to your door. Figuring out the right mix of what to do when and how much of each, well, that’s like a diet program. Everybody wants the perfect body – but are you ready for the Halitosis and Nosebleeds?
The point behind this story is that you need to find the right program to market your small business. One that brings minty freshness to your business, and one that doesn’t cause you too much pain. We’ve got two ideas…Enter 12 Minute Marketing and CloutReach.
Before we talk about those, though, let’s start with another product…
The Marketing Giant that is Facebook.

Then, imagine that your small business gets its own updates each day, on Facebook, so that when people connect with you – when they click that “Like” button – they get to know your business a little better. And you get to know THEM a little better, too.
Imagine updates – “tweets” – sent out to the world each day, on your behalf, so you can start getting to know your prospects a little better.
Imagine what starts to happen when your marketing messages are shared with the world – 200 Million Twitter users and counting – and they’re targeted, succinct, in line with what your business wants to talk about, and they open up doors for connections with, again, more prospects. Prospects you can turn into clients.
But…We’re not done with your CloutReach Marketing program yet…What about LinkedIn?
Remember: LinkedIn is not just for personal connections: getting your company “found” positions you AND your business for more connections, more conversations, and more chances at success.
We’re not done yet – imagine a mobile code like this one – but created specifically for you. Use it on signage, use it in advertising, use it when talking to people about your business. Have it link to whatever you want. Have it customized with your own logo. Get people tagging – and talking about you.
First of all, you could do nothing. Just continue with business as usual. This might be fine for you – maybe things are going along great. If so, great to hear.
Second…you could Sign Up for 12 Minute Marketing. We think it’s ideally suited for the Do It Yourself Marketer – someone who wants to learn all these things themselves. You can jump in for $212 – or spread your payments out over three installments of $99 each.
